The Moreno Valley Unified School District held its annual Spelling Bee this year on January 26, 2021. Despite the different setting, students were professional and performed their very best in hopes to move forward to the county competition.

The event featured 16 spellers from elementary and middle schools, but only one was designated as first place winner.

“We are so proud of Swetha Jayasinghe for placing first in our virtual spelling bee competition,” said Superintendent Dr. Martinrex Kedziora. “It was a completely new experience for all of us, but we are happy to have been able to hold the competition for students to participate.”

Swetha is a 7th grader at Palm Middle School and this is the third year she places first in the Moreno Valley Unified School District Spelling Bee. She will be moving forward to the county competition, but in the event that she is unable to attend, the second place winner is Sophie Gonzalez from Sunnymead Middle School.

“These events allow our students to use a different set of skills that they use in their classroom,” said School Board President Darrell Peeden. “Although it was virtual, they were still competing against other schools and students they had never met before. They were brave for participating in this district-wide competition. I wish both students Swetha and Sophie good luck in the county competition!”
