"M" on Box Springs Mountain to Honor Fallen Heroes in Kabul

By City of Moreno Valley

09/07/2021 at 11:02 AM

The "M" on Box Springs Mountain will be illuminated in red, white, and blue on September 7, 2021, in honor of the thirteen fallen service members killed on the August 26 attack in Kabul, Afghanistan. This remembrance takes place thirteen days after the attack to symbolize the thirteen lives lost -- most of whom originate from Southern California.

"My prayers go out to these service members, their families, and the victims of this tragic event," said Mayor Yxstian Gutierrez. "These Marines, Sailors and Soldiers served our nation heroically as they protected U.S. assets and helped to rescue Americans and Afghans."

Lighting the ‘M’ promotes the City, its civic institutions, state and federal holidays, and other public events of community significance and times of celebration. The City may accept community requests for special lighting to recognize a specific cause or to commemorate or enhance a particular event. Non-profit and charitable organizations can request that the 'M' be illuminated in specific colors to elevate awareness of their cause.

Priority in choosing colors for the lights will be given to promoting events that celebrate the City, its civic institutions, City recognized holidays, public events, and festivals. Requests to change the color or pattern of the 'M’s' decorative lights will be accommodated as dates are available.

For more information, to see the lighting schedule or to submit a request, please visit the City's website.
