Mayor's Message: Equality and Tolerance

By Mayor Yxstian Gutierrez

Dear Moreno Valley Residents,

In light of recent events, I want to discuss the importance of equality and tolerance. It was heartbreaking to learn about our Valley View High School Cheerleaders' mistreatment during a recent football game. I know firsthand the heartache created by intolerance. What these young people went through should have never happened. Our children deserve to feel safe and respected wherever their travels take them. Across the nation, we are seeing far too many people fanning the flames of hatred, so we must speak out to put an end to inequality and unjust treatment. We must strive to be compassionate souls and love our neighbors.

So before hastily heading towards the "comments section," let's remember Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s famous words, "darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." I have been informed that a thorough investigation is in process, and the matter is being taken very seriously. Nothing short of full accountability is acceptable.

Above all, we need to create an open dialogue and strive to understand each other fully. If we do that, we will learn that we have more in common than we realize.

And to the children of our community, I would like to remind you that you are EQUAL.
