Mayor's Message: National Preparedness Month

By Dr. Yxstian Gutierrez

Dear Moreno Valley Residents,

September is National Preparedness Month, where we highlight the importance of preparing yourself and your loved ones for a disaster or emergency.

As Mayor, I know how important it is for a City to be prepared. Emergencies sometimes arise without warning, and it’s vital to have a plan.

Here are a few ideas you can use to stay prepared for an emergency:

·         Create an emergency preparedness kit with non-perishable food and water, flashlights, radios with extra batteries, and a first aid kit.

·         Consider any special needs your family might have. Learn your evacuation routes, and ensure your kids and other family members know the essential phone numbers to call in an emergency.

·         To help pets, keep important items—such as a collar and leash, medicine, and grooming items—in your emergency kit. Take a selfie with your pet and keep it on your phone if you get separated.

·         It’s important to recognize how children may feel during emergencies and help them cope with their emotions.

If you follow these tips, you’ll be more prepared to deal with an emergency or disaster.

From all of us at the City of Moreno Valley, have a safe National Preparedness Month!
