Mayor's Weekly Message 101

Dear Moreno Valley Residents,

Two of my most important companions are my dogs, Kayla and Lassie, whom I adopted from the Moreno Valley Animal Shelter. I made the decision to adopt them only after I was certain I was ready to commit to taking care of both of them for their whole lives.

At the holidays, however, some people find themselves with new pets given as gifts – pets they weren’t expecting and aren’t prepared to commit to. The givers mean well, but too often the kitten or puppy involved ends up in a less-than-ideal situation or back at the Shelter, when what they really deserve is a stable, loving home for life.

If you want to give a shelter animal as a gift, the Moreno Valley Animal Shelter can help by providing a gift certificate for the cost of adopting a canine or feline. That way, recipients have the chance to really take time to consider if they’re prepared to care for an animal for years to come. If it’s not the right time, the gift certificate can be refunded, and the cat or dog who might have gone to someone not prepared to care for a pet can go instead to someone who is ready to make that commitment.

Cats and dogs add so much fun and love to our lives. We owe it to them to provide a stable, loving home with humans they can count on to take care of them – even when they’re not puppies and kittens any more.
