Mayor's Weekly Message: Let's Curb Catalytic Converter Theft in Moreno Valley!

By Ulises Cabrera , Mayor of Moreno Valley

Dear Moreno Valley Residents,

One of my top priorities as mayor is to keep our community safe. We are making that happen by curbing catalytic converter theft in Moreno Valley.

Catalytic converter theft is an issue nationwide and affects every community, and the California State Legislature has passed new laws to address these crimes.

We’re doing our part in Moreno Valley with our new Catalytic Converter Credibility Check.

Under the Catalytic Converter Credibility Check, businesses across Moreno Valley are legally required to purchase converters exclusively from commercial enterprises or verified vehicle owners.

These businesses must also maintain a written record of the vehicle from which the converter was removed and preserve a copy of the vehicle’s title, so we can ensure these converters are coming from reputable sources.

The penalties for businesses violating these laws are harsh. If you’re caught accepting stolen catalytic converters, you can incur up to $7800 in fines and have to cease operating your business for a year.

If you know a business that is accepting stolen catalytic converters, call our tip line at 951-413-3335 or 951-413-3340 or report it online at moval.org/converter.

If you’re a victim of catalytic converter theft in Moreno Valley or see a crime happening, call the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department at 951-247-8700.

Together, we can end catalytic converter theft in Moreno Valley!
