MLK Day

As our nation celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. Day yesterday, I reflected on the sentiment that it’s not just about where we’ve been, but where - as a nation - we are still called to go. MLK’s legacy is a living reminder that progress takes intention, courage, and compassion.

Dr. King challenged us to believe in something bigger than ourselves: a society rooted in fairness, dignity, and mutual respect. Those ideals still matter deeply today, especially in communities like ours, where people from all walks of life come together to share in building a brighter future. Our strength has always come from our diversity and our willingness to listen, learn, and grow together.

Here in Moreno Valley, I see Dr. King’s influence reflected in everyday moments: neighbors supporting one other; families creating better futures; and residents serving our community. Most of the time, change begins with small, consistent acts that move us closer to mutual understanding and building unity.

MLK Jr. Day is also a reminder that each of us has an important role. For instance, speaking up for fairness, mentoring our youth, volunteering our time, and simply treating others with empathy and respect. These actions, no matter how big or small, are how we turn Dr. King’s words into tangible, visceral change.

Let’s draw inspiration from Dr. King’s life and continue to strive for a Moreno Valley that reflects the best of his vision - a future where opportunity is within reach for all, differences are celebrated, and our common humanity and decency guide the way. I’m grateful to serve a community that keeps that spirit alive, not only on this day, but every day of the year.
