Moreno Valley Begins Fall Fire Hazard Inspections

The City of Moreno Valley is asking property owners to take a close look around their homes and properties as the Fire Department begins its annual Fall Fire Hazard Reduction Inspection Program.

Initial inspections are scheduled for October 5 through October 9, with firefighters and inspectors looking for conditions that could increase the risk of a wildfire, including dry weeds, overgrown vegetation, brush and combustible debris.

The inspections are an important reminder that Southern California's wildfire danger does not disappear when summer ends. Dry vegetation combined with fall winds can create conditions in which a small fire can spread rapidly, making preventative property maintenance an important part of protecting neighborhoods.

Property owners, particularly those responsible for vacant or unimproved parcels, are being encouraged to clear weeds and dry vegetation, trim trees and brush, remove combustible debris and maintain required firebreaks.

Properties found out of compliance during the first round of inspections are expected to receive a Notice of Violation beginning October 12. Owners will then have a 15-day voluntary cleanup period to correct the identified hazards.

Follow-up inspections are scheduled for October 27 through October 30.

Properties that remain out of compliance could eventually be subject to City-led abatement, with the associated costs and fees potentially charged to the property owner.

While the program includes enforcement, its larger purpose is prevention. Clearing dry vegetation around properties can help firefighters defend structures and can reduce the amount of fuel available to a wildfire.

Residents can also use the inspection period as an opportunity to examine their own properties, even if they have not received a notice. Removing dead plants, leaves and other flammable material from around structures can make a meaningful difference.

Wildfire prevention is ultimately a community effort. A well-maintained property not only helps protect one home or business—it can also help reduce the danger to surrounding properties and neighborhoods.

Additional information about Moreno Valley's Fire Hazard Reduction Program is available through the City of Moreno Valley.
