MORENO VALLEY, Calif. – State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond announced on February 28, 2024 that Moreno Valley High School is one of the 293 middle and high schools selected to be honored under the 2024 California Distinguished Schools Award Program. This award program recognizes schools for closing the achievement gap and those demonstrating exceptional student performance.

The district shared the incredible news with Moreno Valley High School during a staff meeting on March 6, 2024.

“We are extremely proud of this remarkable achievement,” said Interim Superintendent Dr. Robert Verdi. “This is our second school since 2019 that will now have this badge of honor, demonstrating our school’s commitment to our students and their future.”

North Ridge Elementary School was previously recognized as a California Distinguished School in 2019. Moreno Valley High School is the second school in the Moreno Valley Unified School District to receive this honor.

“Earlier this year we also learned about our district exiting the differentiated assistance due to the enormous amount of work invested by our students, teachers and staff,” said School Board President Brandy Clark. “Earning this state award is just another testament of success. It truly speaks volumes about the work our schools have been doing. We are beyond proud!!”

Since its inception in 1985, the California Distinguished Schools Award remains one of the state’s most important ways to celebrate exceptional schools, districts, teachers, and classified employees for their innovation, talent, and success in supporting students.

Schools were selected by the California Department of Education (CDE) by multiple measures that identified eligible schools based on their performance on the state indicators as specified on the California School Dashboard.

“It is my pleasure to honor and recognize these 293 secondary schools for their efforts to provide exemplary public education to all students. Excellent middle schools and high schools play a critical role in the life outcomes of our young people,” Thurmond said. “This year’s California Distinguished Schools celebration provides us with an opportunity to recognize the hard work of our secondary educators and school staff who help our young adults discover passions and access college- and career-ready experiences that will propel them through life.”

The 2024 California Distinguished Schools will be recognized at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim on May 3, 2024.
