MVUSD Holds Record-Breaking Fair

The Moreno Valley Unified School District held its annual Science and Engineering Fair on February 7 and 8. Two hundred twenty-seven projects were on display at Bridges Learning Center. Students submitted projects which ranged from solving real-world problems such as designing and building a working hoverboard to creating a device that prevented pets from unraveling toilet paper rolls in the bathroom. Other projects examined hard-hitting scientific issues like contaminated water and the effects of lead exposure. After intense scrutiny by a team of outside judges, thirty-five projects were chosen to advance to the Riverside County Science and Engineering Fair to be held in April.

Before the awards ceremony on Friday evening, students were invited to arrive early and participate in hands-on science activities. They were given the opportunity to explore a maker-space aboard the Moreno Valley College Mobile Innovation Center Bus, take a green-screen photo, experience a virtual reality field trip with NASA teams and learn about Bees from BeeRooted. Students even got to spin a wheel for prizes from John’s Incredible Pizza and meet their restaurant mascot, Incredibear.

During the awards ceremony, two hundred seventy student participants were recognized and received a medal. Selected outstanding projects were given community awards and prizes from our sponsors - John’s Incredible Pizza, State Farm-Adolfo Saldana, Polly’s Pies, Genetics Training Facilities, and The Little Gym-Riverside.

At the very end of the program, thirty-five projects were proudly announced as MVUSD’s representatives to advance to the Riverside County Science and Engineering Fair. The Riverside County Science and Engineering Fair will be held April 2-3, 2019 at the Riverside Convention Center.

A total of 35 entries are advancing to the county fair (some entries are from a group):
