05/10/2019 at 10:01 AM

MVUSD students had the chance to see former first lady Michelle Obama at UCLA on April 1, 2019, as part of the National College Signing Day events and Obama’s Reach Higher campaign. Canyon Springs High School with principal Tamara Kerr and Assistant Principal Sean Roberson took 27 seniors to the event, and Moreno Valley High School and Valley View High School took about 15 seniors each. The event featured celebrity guests and performances to celebrate the Class of 2019’s commitment to higher education. Another group of students from MVUSD high schools watched a live stream of the event at UC Riverside.

“We are extremely happy that our students had the opportunity to participate in this exciting experience with other college-bound seniors from around Southern California,” said Board Vice President Cleveland Johnson.

Throughout the week College Signing Day activities continued at MVUSD high schools.

At Canyon Springs, seniors attended an assembly, to celebrate their commitment to attend a 2-year community college, 4-year college/university, trade school or the military in the fall. The event featured college reveal videos, a performance from the school’s Show Choir, top ten reveal, students signing college commitment certificates, and a cake to finish off the celebration. The CSHS class of 2019 received over 680 college/military acceptances at over 100 different colleges, universities, and military branches.

Moreno Valley High School celebrated seniors moving on to higher education, military, or the workforce this week as well. A total of 207 seniors at the school have made a commitment to attend a college or university this fall.

At Valley View High School, College Signing Day was a celebration with 130 Seniors who committed to attending more than 30 colleges and universities or are enlisting in the United States Armed Forces. Students heard inspirational speeches, information on their next steps for college, and enjoyed a continental breakfast. It was an opportunity for students to commemorate their accomplishments, reflect on their journey, and celebrate with their friends and classmates. The school also hosted a FAFSA Fiesta to celebrate students who had completed their FAFSA forms, and to assist them with their post-high school plans.

Vista del Lago High School will hold their signing day on May 17.

“We are so proud of all of our soon-to-be high school graduates and are looking forward to hearing about their future success,” said Superintendent Dr. Martinrex Kedziora, “Our students are achieving at high levels and are prepared for college and careers. They are truly Shining Brighter with Excellence on Purpose!”

Palm Middle School students also got involved with a Reach Higher activity lead by the school counselors. Palm students had fun taking pictures wearing caps and gowns and made a commitment to Reach Higher by pursuing their future careers.
