October has arrived in the Inland Empire, bringing cooler evenings, changing seasons and a full calendar of community celebrations stretching across San Bernardino and Riverside counties.
From fall festivals and Halloween celebrations to health fairs, community resource events and outdoor activities, October gives Inland Empire families plenty of opportunities to get out of the house and reconnect with their communities.
One of the month’s themes is family-friendly fall fun. Communities throughout the region are preparing pumpkin festivals, costume celebrations, trunk-or-treat events, harvest festivals and other seasonal gatherings.
In San Bernardino, families can look forward to several October activities, including a Trunk or Treat event scheduled for October 8. Later in the month, Inland Regional Center will host its Super Fall Festival on Saturday, October 24, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 1425 S. Waterman Avenue. The festival combines Halloween fun with community outreach, giving families an opportunity to visit resource booths while children participate in games, activities and treats. Guests are encouraged to dress as their favorite video game characters.
Another event puts an emphasis on making Halloween accessible to more families. The Spooktacular & Fun Safety Fair, scheduled for October 18 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Riverside County Fair & National Date Festival grounds in Indio, is designed as a sensory-friendly Halloween experience for the autism and intellectual and developmental disabilities community. Activities are expected to include carnival games, a corn maze, inflatables, trick-or-treat stations, community resources and opportunities for children to meet first responders and see emergency vehicles up close.
October's calendar also extends well beyond Halloween. Community organizations are planning health and wellness programs, resource fairs and opportunities for residents to learn more about services available throughout the Inland Empire. The Inland Empire Community Collaborative's October calendar includes children's health and wellness activities, child care discussions, community health services and family-oriented programs.
Across the wider region, October's calendar includes events such as pumpkin festivals, Oktoberfest celebrations, harvest festivals, arts and crafts events, car shows and community Halloween celebrations. Scheduled events can be found in communities ranging from San Bernardino and Moreno Valley to Riverside, Rancho Cucamonga, Rialto, Eastvale, Menifee and other Inland Empire cities.
For local businesses, nonprofit organizations and community groups, these gatherings also provide an opportunity to meet residents face-to-face. Festivals and fairs often bring together local vendors, public agencies, first responders, service organizations and families in one location.
The variety of activities reflects one of the Inland Empire's strengths: although the region covers a large geographic area, individual cities continue to create events that bring neighbors together.
October also provides a reminder that community involvement does not have to mean attending a formal meeting or joining an organization. Sometimes it can be as simple as taking children to a fall festival, visiting a local business, participating in a community fair or spending an afternoon at an event with neighbors.
