During an emergency board meeting on May 1, the Moreno Valley Unified School District (MVUSD) school board unanimously passed a resolution to declare “emergency conditions exist at the Moreno Valley Unified School District and offices.” The move is in response to the COVID-19 health crisis and will maintain closures of MVUSD schools and offices.

“Our top priority remains the health and wellbeing of our students and staff,” said Moreno Valley Unified School District Superintendent, Dr. Martinrex Kedziora.

“Until we are able to ensure their safety, we believe the most prudent course of action is to keep schools closed and continue with distance learning.” On March 13, the Public Health Officer of the County of Riverside issued an order closing all schools from March 16 through April 30. The order was amended on

April 1 to extend the closure through June 19, 2020. However, on Tuesday, May 5,the Riverside County Board of Supervisors will consider an agenda item to rescind the order.

“We all want to get back to school, but the decision to open schools should be left to the medical experts and not be used as a political maneuver,” said MVUSD Board President Marsha Locke. “This resolution lets parents and students know that we are putting their interests first and will continue to do so because their health is our prime concern.”

Although the order closes schools through June 19, MVUSD’s last day is scheduled for Friday, June 12.
