March Mountain High School's ACTION program had their very first Country Festival in late December. The ACTION program is an adult transition program for students with moderate to severe disabilities. Students are taught using a functional life skills curriculum titled the BASICS 3.
Recreation and Leisure is one piece of the curriculum, where students learn communication, social and appropriate behavioral skills and how they are important to their individual growth towards independence.
The Country Festival had square dancers from Cow Town USA in Riverside. Professional Caller, Phil Vinokaur and his 7 square dancers demonstrated traditional square dancing. There were also professional bull riders, who showed the students how to rope a calf.
The ACTION teachers, Tamra Debeaubian, David Cole, Randy Sohn, Jennifer Atienza and their outstanding instructional assistants, provided Country Festival games for all to play. The enthusiasm between the students with and without disabilities was evident.
This inclusive event was praised by Parent Ambassador, Meisha Smith. She said, "This is truly an amazing event! All of the students were being included, and having a great time!"
Under the direction of Principal Steve Quintero, Executive SELPA Director Pam Bender, Superintendent Dr. Martinrex Kedziora and our Board of Education this event was able to be a great success.
