On Friday, April 26, 2024, tragedy struck in the quiet neighborhood of Riverside's 2800 block of Newkirk Drive. What began as a routine day for a tree trimmer ended in sorrow as emergency responders were called to the scene of a harrowing accident.

At approximately 1:46 p.m., the City of Riverside Fire Department received a distress call reporting a technical rescue underway. A tree trimmer, contracted by a homeowner in the area, had become trapped approximately 30 feet above ground while in the process of trimming a palm tree behind a residential property. The situation quickly escalated in complexity, prompting the deployment of the department’s technical rescue team.

Upon arrival, firefighters were met with a scene of urgency and concern. The tree trimmer had become ensnared under the weight of palm fronds that had fallen onto him during the trimming process. Despite the valiant efforts of the responders, tragically, the tree trimmer was declared deceased by Firefighter/Paramedics at the scene.

With heavy hearts, the incident shifted from a rescue operation to a somber body recovery effort. Riverside Police Department and the Riverside County Coroner's Office collaborated closely with emergency personnel to facilitate the respectful recovery of the fallen tree trimmer.

A total of 18 firefighters, three chief officers, and one overhead captain swiftly mobilized to address the situation, working tirelessly to manage the aftermath of the incident and provide support to those affected by the tragedy.

While the specifics surrounding the cause of the accident are still under investigation, initial reports suggest that the incident was unintentional in nature, highlighting the inherent risks associated with occupations such as tree trimming.

As the Riverside community grapples with the sobering reality of this loss, thoughts and condolences are extended to the loved ones of the deceased, as well as to the brave responders who worked diligently to manage the situation.

The City of Riverside Fire Department urges residents to prioritize safety and exercise caution when undertaking tasks that involve potential hazards, emphasizing the importance of vigilance and adherence to proper procedures in all endeavors.

As investigations into the Newkirk Incident continue, the community stands united in mourning the loss of a valued member and in offering support to those affected by this tragic event
