VA Loma Linda Healthcare System (VALLHS) received recognition from the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association for Get with the Guidelines- Stroke and Type 2 Diabetes protocols in 2021.

“We’re honored to be recognized by AHA/ASA for our prompt lifesaving stroke care,” said Amina Olatunji, Clinical Nurse Specialist and Stroke Coordinator, Department of Neurology, VALLHS. “Get With The Guidelines helps us implement the latest research-based approach and provide the best care possible for Veterans.”

In addition to stroke care excellence, VALLHS is recognized for the Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll.

“We test every stroke patient for diabetes prior to discharge,” said Olatunji. “Standard hemoglobin A1C testing enables health care teams to diagnose and improve recovery outcomes for patients with Type 2 Diabetes.”

Research shows that hospitals adhering to clinical measures through the AHA’s quality improvement programs often see fewer readmissions and lower mortality rates due to their consistent streamlined approach.

A multi-disciplinary Stroke Advisory Committee at VALLHS analyzes data, reviews response times, and implements evidence-based practices to comply with AHA/ASA guidelines. Staff in the Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit, Laboratory, Neurology, Pharmacy and Radiology all work together to provide expedient stroke care for Veterans.

“I’m grateful for the team, and proud to maintain gold-level stroke care even during a pandemic,” said Olatunji. “We’re committed to the highest standards of stroke care, and it’s an honor to serve Veterans at VA.”
