Washi tape bookmarks are a simple and cheerful way to add personality to your reading routine. This DIY project turns lightweight paper and decorative tape into colorful page markers that feel both fun and functional. Washi tape comes in countless patterns, making it easy to customize bookmarks for different books, moods, or seasons. Because the materials are inexpensive and easy to find, this craft works well for quick projects or group activities. With a little creativity, you can make bookmarks that feel thoughtful and stylish.

This project is beneficial because it encourages creativity while producing something useful. Handmade bookmarks help protect book pages and make it easy to return to favorite passages. Creating them can also be relaxing, especially for readers who enjoy pairing crafts with quiet hobbies. Washi tape is forgiving to work with and easy to reposition, which makes this project beginner friendly. Finished bookmarks also make charming gifts for students, teachers, or fellow book lovers.

Begin by gathering your supplies and preparing a flat workspace. You will need sturdy paper or card stock, scissors, washi tape in your favorite designs, a ruler, and optional embellishments like stickers or ribbon. Choose card stock thick enough to hold its shape without bending easily. Cut the paper into long rectangles, typically about two inches wide and six inches long. Keeping sizes consistent gives your bookmarks a polished look.

Next, select your washi tape designs and plan how you want them arranged. You can cover the entire bookmark with one pattern or mix several tapes for a layered look. Apply tape carefully from top to bottom, smoothing as you go to avoid wrinkles or bubbles. Press firmly along edges so the tape adheres well. This step is where color and personality come to life.

Once the tape is applied, flip the bookmark over and trim any excess tape from the edges. Use scissors for clean lines and sharp corners. If desired, add tape to the back side as well for durability and a finished appearance. Double sided tape coverage helps reinforce the bookmark and makes it sturdier. Take your time trimming so the edges look neat.

After trimming, add optional decorative touches. Punch a small hole at the top of the bookmark if you want to attach ribbon or tassels. Thread ribbon through the hole and tie securely, trimming excess length. Stickers or hand drawn accents can also personalize the design. Keep decorations lightweight so the bookmark stays flat in books.

Finally, press the bookmark flat and allow the tape to settle. Test it in a book to ensure it slides smoothly between pages. Avoid placing thick embellishments where pages close tightly. Store finished bookmarks flat or gift them in small bundles. With minimal effort and simple supplies, washi tape bookmarks become bright, handmade companions for every reading adventure.
