MVUSD Test Results Show Strong Improvement

Moreno Valley Unified School District (MVUSD) achieved a four percentage point growth in mathematics on the 2016-17 California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) online test results.  MVUSD is one of only two school districts in Riverside County to achieve a four percent growth.

The online tests are “comprehensive, end-of-year assessments of grade-level learning that measure progress toward college and career readiness,” according to the California Department of Education.

English Language Arts (ELA) scores are holding steady over the past three years. As a district, 30 percent of students either met or exceeded the standard in ELA. Twenty-one percent of students met or exceeded the standard in mathematics, up from 17 percent last year.

The growth is the result of strong collaboration between teachers, classified staff, families, students and administration, as well as educator coaching from the Professional Development team. A similar plan for ELA, along with new curriculum, is being implemented at all school sites for the 2017-18 school year.

“The increase in mathematics is impressive, and a testament to the strong support our educators are providing each student,” Superintendent Dr. Martinrex Kedziora said, “We always have more work to do, and the most recent scores show our planning and hard work is producing results for our students.”

In addition, district Advanced Placement (AP) test results are encouraging. The participation rate among the four high schools has increased by about eight percent, with the pass rate holding steady at 29 percent.

“We are seeing more students participate in AP courses and testing, but that has not hurt our scores. I am proud of our educators who work every day to ensure our students are ready for college or careers after high school,” said Board President Cleveland Johnson.

Other highlights from the Moreno Valley Unified School District CAASPP results:

Five grades experienced growth in mathematics district-wide (Grades 3,4,5,6,8) Three schools had significant growth of more than 10 percent in mathematics. (Bear Valley, Hidden Springs, Ridgecrest Elementary Schools) Sixty-seven percent of elementary schools had five percent or greater growth in mathematics. Seventy-five percent of high schools had growth in English Language Arts. Six schools saw more than 5 percent growth in English Language Arts (Bear Valley, Edgemont, Hidden Springs, Ridgecrest, Sugar Hill Elementary Schools, Valley View High School).
