MORENO VALLEY>> As the summer season approaches and temperatures rise, the number of snake sightings increases. The Moreno Valley Fire Department would like to share some important safety tips about snakes, particularly rattlesnakes, which are found across Southern California.
Snakes can trick at a distance of up to one-half their body length. This means that while a snake may seem to be a safe distance away, it may still pose a threat. In addition, even a snake without its head can still bite, so steer clear of the carcasses of snakes.
In order to keep snakes away from homes and backyards, residents are encouraged to keep grass and vegetation cut short. Shrubs and bushes should be trimmed short. Piles of debris, including branches, leaves, boards, and logs should be removed from yards, as these provide hiding and nesting places for snakes.
If you see a snake, the Moreno Valley Fire Department advises that you walk instead of run. Take two steps backward and watch where the snake goes. Then calmly turn around and leave the area. Always contact a professional to remove a snake. If safe to do so, take a picture of the snake so professionals are able to identify it.
If bitten by a snake, remain calm and remove yourself from the area immediately. Call 911 and seek medical attention. If you know or suspect the snake is venomous, remove any constricting jewelry, watches, or clothing. Keep the injured area as still as possible. You may clean the bite, but do not attempt to suck the venom out yourself. In addition, do not apply ice or use a tourniquet.
In order to keep your pets safe, ask your vet about the rattlesnake vaccine. The vaccine will help reduce or delay the effects of the venom if bitten. Keep your pets on a 6-foot leash and do not allow them to wander too far away. Avoid areas that are rocky or dense, as these places may contain stakes. Staying on the trail will help you to avoid snakes that may be in your path.
If you or your pet encounters a snake, walk away slowly. If your pet is bitten, they will need immediate veterinary care. Make sure to immobilize your pet and keep them as quiet as possible. The more your pet moves the quicker the venom will circulate through their body.
