Moreno Valley Unified Nutrition Services provided 39,387 free lunches for children age 18 and under this summer.
The meals were funded through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s “Seamless Summer” program, intended to keep children well-nourished during the summer break.
An average of 1,010 meals per day were provided Monday through Friday from June 16 through Aug. 8 at Weston, Celebration, and TownGate parks.
“Many children depend on school for breakfast or lunch,” explained MVUSD Nutrition Services Director Carla Lyder. “When school lets out for summer, their need doesn’t go away. Providing simple but nutritious lunches for them during the break helps keep them healthy, and that’s good for learning when they come back to school.”
Daily menu selections included various cold sandwiches and hot barbecue items such as chicken, hamburgers, links and Rib-B-Ques. Meals were served with seasonal fresh vegetables and fruits, milk and corn on the cob.
About 83 percent of Moreno Valley Unified students currently qualify for free or reduced-price meals.
