The Moreno Valley Unified School District has hired Tim McGillivray as Public Information Officer (PIO) and believe he will be a great addition to the team in the superintendent’s office. McGillivray comes to the new position with more than 30 years of experience in the field of communications and public information. He graduated from Washington State University, Edward R. Murrow College of Communication in 1983 and earned a Master of Public Administration from California State University, Northridge, Tseng College in 2012. He began his career as an Emmy-winning journalist, working for CBS television affiliates and National Public Radio. McGillivray has more than 11 years of experience in Public Information with three large, diverse, urban school districts in California and Washington. Additionally, he has more than 15 years of experience as Public Information Officer for the City of Pasadena, City of Szeged, Hungary, and Mr. McGillivray served as Senior Public Information Officer for the Washington State Senate and Lt. Governor for many years. The role of the Public Information Officer is to respond to public and news media questions, and to help schools and the school district better communicate with parents and other community members. “We want to make sure we’re listening as well as talking,” McGillivray said. “Our School Board and Superintendent Dr. Judy D. White are committed to both transparency and community engagement. They want to make sure everyone in the community feels welcome at Moreno Valley schools, and that includes joining in the work of education.” For example, MVUSD actively recruits businesses and community organizations to get directly involved in supporting education through the Adopt-a-School program. Each school has several businesses and/or community partners now volunteering time and sometimes resources to help students succeed. “The majority of adults in any community don’t have children in school,” McGillivray explained, “but as taxpayers they pay for schools. We want Moreno Valley residents to know that they’re getting a tremendous return on their investment in public schools. At MVUSD we have outstanding leadership, and our students are achieving at high levels and moving on to some of America’s very best colleges and universities. It’s an exciting time for MVUSD and our community.”
