Moreno Valley>> Walking and hiking are fun and healthy ways to keep active. With that in mind, spring is here and so is slightly warmer weather. With the start of a new season, the City of Moreno Valley would like to remind everyone to be cautious while hiking. It is recommended that hiking be done with friends and family. Not only is sharing the experience a benefit of hiking, but there's safety in numbers. Remember to tell someone who isn't going on the hike with you, about your intended location and intended return. Be sure to take a cell phone in case of emergency and be prepared to provide an exact latitude/longitude to rescue services. Hikers should also remember that it's important to make contact after you return. Drinking a lot of water is also an important thing to remember when hiking. Staying hydrated can prevent heat related illnesses such a heat stroke or dehydration. Hikers are reminded to drink water often, even when they are not feeling particularly thirsty. Avoid alcohol and drinks that contain large amounts of sugar, as these can cause you to lose more bodily fluids. Cold drinks should also be avoided, as they can cause stomach cramps. Being careful not to overexert yourself is also important. Remember, there are hikes for all ages and abilities. Hikers should also take care to stay on the trails, as walking off trail can increase chances of injury or getting lost. If you encounter wildlife on the trail, keep your distance and back away slowly. It is important that you do not run, as this can send the wrong message to the animal.
