A total of 72 Riverside County students from 16 school districts, 7 private schools and one county charter school received gold medals at the 32nd annual Inland Science and Engineering Fair held earlier in April in San Bernardino. Forty-nine gold medal recipients will advance to the California State Science Fair, to be held April 28-29 at the California Science Center in Los Angeles. Moreno Valley student, Nagee Clowney, a 7th grader at Vista Heights Middle in Moreno Valley won the Junior gold in the Inland Science and Engineering Fair. Congratulations! Two Corona-Norco Unified School District students took home top honors with sweepstakes awards—4th grade student Kennedy Kane from Rosa Parks Elementary School and Jared Tramontano from Centennial High School. Tramontano’s project was entitled Mastering Monopoly while Kane’s project was named Dimensional Quasi-Attractors with Dynamical Action on Topological Manifolds. The award-winning projects were among 830 others entered by nearly 1,000 students from throughout Riverside, Inyo, Mono and San Bernardino (RIMS) counties. Many projects were selected as community award winners that netted additional awards including gift certificates, trophies, electronic tablets, and cash awards up to $1,000. Individual and group projects were judged in 22 categories of science – from microbiology to zoology, math and physics to electronics, and consumer sciences to earth sciences. There were three divisions of competition: Elementary (fourth- and fifth-graders), Junior (sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders) and Senior (ninth- through 12th-graders). Elementary Division participants are not eligible to compete in the state event. The regional fair was sponsored by the Riverside County Office of Education, San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools, Inyo County Office of Education and Mono County Superintendent of Schools.
