“People: Subjects of Interests” was the latest exhibit at the Vanguard Community Art Gallery. July 19 marked the opening day of the exhibit by artist Chick Curtis. The Vanguard Community Art Gallery is a program created by the Moreno Valley Cultural Arts Foundation in an effort to promote the arts (visual, performance, and the written word) within Moreno Valley. The intent of the Vanguard Community Art Gallery is to create opportunities as well as awareness of the local artists’ ability to create marvelous pieces of art. The foundation attempts to forge connections with local artists, local commerce, and government to bring art into the community. Through their efforts, the foundation was able to bring Moreno Valley the exceptional work of Chick Curtis. Chick Curtis is a mostly self-taught artist who re-found his passion for drawing after 30 years away from the canvas. Curtis’ Art focuses around landscapes and people. “I am drawn with equal intensity to landscapes and people,” he said. “Because of the spiritual quality of being in nature, and to people because of the complexity of human nature.” Curtis’ exhibit features twelve different oil paintings which revolve around people in the most common of settings. Several of his paintings focus within a restaurant; however, Curtis wants the viewer to have a particular question in mind when admiring his work. “I want the viewer to look at my paintings and create their own story.” Curtis said. “What is this man thinking? What is really going on with these people?” The exhibit runs through Aug. 31. Everyone who is interested in the exhibit or appreciate art should stop by and visit The Vanguard Community Art Gallery. For information about The Vanguard Community Art Gallery contact Richard Archer at (951)486-9700; 27120 Eucalyptus Avenue, Suite A, Moreno Valley, Calif. 92555.
