Rolling Forward: Colton Streets Get a Bike-Friendly Makeover

The City of Colton is making a significant leap forward in active transportation, with the launch of the West Colton Bicycle Lane Project—a comprehensive initiative designed to create safer and more accessible streets for cyclists throughout the community. The project will add 2.5 miles of new Class II bike lanes, marked with dedicated striping and signage, to make cycling more comfortable and secure for riders of all ages. Certain sections will feature buffered lanes, providing extra separation from vehicle traffic, while intersections will receive upgraded ADA-compliant ramps to support riders and pedestrians with mobility challenges. Portions of San Bernardino Avenue will be widened where necessary to accommodate the expanded bike corridor.

The new lanes are strategically planned to connect key community destinations, including Garcia Elementary, Jehue Middle School, Morris Elementary, West Valley Park, and the Arrowhead Regional Medical Center, giving residents safer options for commuting, running errands, or simply enjoying recreation. Beyond improving safety, the project encourages healthier lifestyles by providing an alternative to driving, while also contributing to cleaner air and more livable streets.

Construction is already underway, with the city anticipating completion, by July 2026. During the build-out, residents are encouraged to stay engaged and provide feedback. The West Colton Bicycle Lane Project is part of a broader effort to modernize Colton’s transportation network, complementing existing bike paths and trail corridors funded through county and federal programs.

The initiative represents a meaningful investment in the city’s future, prioritizing community connectivity, public health, and sustainable transportation.
