The holidays are here, and as you cozy up in front of a fireplace or decorate your tree, it's important to recognize fire hazards.

Here are a few tips from CAL FIRE/Riverside County Fire Department to stay safe as temperatures drop:

  • Do not leave lit candles unattended or place them near flammable materials.
  • Ensure holiday lights are free of cracks, frays, or damaged plugs.
  • Do not overload electrical outlets.
  • Ensure pot handles and electrical cords are out of children's reach.
  • Be sure to have working smoke alarms.
  • If you need a new smoke alarm, get one for free at City Hall through the SAFER program.
  • Ensure fireplaces are free of cracks, blockages, or creosote build-up.
  • Always use a fire screen on fireplaces.
